Retirement and Non-Traditional Candidate Pools

retiring healthcare workers

There’s no shortage of information about the aging healthcare workforce and large number of Nurses and Physicians that will be retiring over the next decade. More than 50% of nurses are reaching retirement age, while their fellow aging baby boomers need more healthcare services, and there’s also a shortage of faculty to train a sufficient workforce of new nurses. Here in Georgia, the shortage is especially challenging as our population continues to grow, increasing demand for services. Georgia has too few nurses.

How will healthcare companies fill the workforce gap? New workers may lack the skills and experience needed. Existing team members may be struggling with increased housing costs and begin looking elsewhere for work.  Atlanta has definitely seen a challenge as development changes neighborhoods and drives up housing costs. Income Needed to Rent.

So, how do we meet the hiring demand caused by a shortage of healthcare professionals? Here are a few easy starting points:

  • Do you offer a training bridge program for employees to develop skills and grow into new roles? Bridging the Gap.
  • How are you encouraging members of the community to get the education necessary for your workforce needs? 7 High Paying Careers to get in less than 4 years.
  • What about outreach to middle and high school students, who are trying to figure out what their school curriculum and career path should be? Organizations that allow students to learn more about potential career paths include Explorers, HOSA and Job Shadow
  • How actively are you engaging with transitioning military veterans to address their unique needs when entering the civilian workforce? Participate in military career fairs, share audience specific info on your website, and leverage any veteran team members who can talk the talk.

These are not new ideas but it can be difficult to stretch while dealing with the tasks right in front of you. We all know the quote about the definition of insanity “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results,” but I prefer to think of Adaptability. “Adaptability is about the powerful difference between adapting to cope and adapting to win.” Max McKeown.

I encourage you to choose just one initiative to reach non-traditional candidates to meet the demand and don’t settle for coping. Take the first step toward adapting to win!
