Your podcast episode is only as good as the questions you ask your guest. So, the following are seven tips for creating an engaging podcast.
- Choose guests wisely: Be sure to book people who are willing to chat and are passionate about the topic you’ll discuss. Are they interesting? Is there a unique perspective or story you can draw out of them?
- Do your research: Don’t just check a prospective guest’s bio — check out other interviews they’ve done and read their articles and other recent content. Also, check out their social media to see what they’re all about.
- What’s the goal of the interview: This may seem obvious – but be sure to maintain focus on what you want your audience to take away from the conversation.
- Write GREAT questions: Never ask anything that could be answered with a boringly simple “yes” or “no.” Instead, ensure your guests will open up by posing questions that require a detailed, nuanced reply. Oh – and be sure to write more questions than you think you’ll need … just in case.
- Listen more than you talk: Listening is a CRUCIAL skill during any interview. How else will you come up with AWESOME follow up questions?
- Guide, but don’t dominate: No one likes a friend who bulldozes a conversation. So never do it with your podcast guests.
- Have fun: If you and your guest are enjoying yourselves, you’ll have a more fruitful conversation … you people will WANT to listen in.
