Today is Higher Education Day; and it’s safe to say that the path of higher education is not simple. It requires time, money, and hard work, which can be discouraging for some students. Celebrated each year on June 6, Higher Education Day is a time to encourage students to follow their academic goals and raise awareness on scholarship opportunities and financial aid for those who may think higher education is not financially feasible.
As a current college student, I can attest from personal experience, it’s challenging. However, seeing the outcomes from my hard work and experiences keeps me motivated and makes it worthwhile.
I started at the College of Charleston studying exercise science. While I enjoyed it at first, I knew it wasn’t ultimately what I wanted to do. After a year, I changed my major to meteorology, something I’ve loved since I can remember. Now, as a rising junior hoping to break into the broadcasting world, I’ve gotten the great opportunity to intern with SCG and learn more about media through public relations.
One of the greatest benefits of higher education is the freedom it offers.
For instance:
- Not every subject interests everyone. With higher education, students get to choose what topics they study versus everyone taking the same class, as in high school. Personally, I do much better in classes that interest me, so the option to take classes that intrigue me makes the experience more enjoyable.
- Interests may change. And if they do, you have the option to switch your studies. As an example, I did a complete one-eighty in terms of my studies and career path; and the beauty is, I could do it again if I wish to.
- Enjoy the freedom of independence. Independence is one of the best things higher education has brought me. It allows you to learn important things like time management. I have learned to be prepared for things I never would have two years ago.
Higher Education Day is far more significant than it may seem. I believe this special day should be more widely recognized to get the message across to even more people. To me, Higher Education Day celebrates those who have gone through or are currently receiving higher education. By celebrating those students, it serves as an inspiration to others who are hesitant about continuing their education and reminds them they have many academic and financial options.
